Terming Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav as a natural ally of the Left, the CPI(M) today said it expected him to be with the Left in future.
"Mulayam Singhji is a natural ally of the Left. We have a very old association with Mulayamji. We hope to have him by our side in the days to come," CPI(M) Central Committee member Gautam Deb said.
He was speaking to reporters after S P general secretary Sanjay Dalmia called on CPI(M) politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the state party headquarters on Alimuddin Street in the city.
Although Dalmia remained tightlipped on his meeting with Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and other Left leaders, Deb, who was present in the meeting, said that the present political situation in the country and positions held by different political parties were discussed.
"We discussed the current political situation of the country and the positions of different political parties. Buddadeb Bhattacharjee told him that the Left on the basis of a charter that comes out in the meeting of the four Left parties in Delhi will discuss the next course of action with other political parties," Deb said.
"We have told him that in days to come, we consider Mulayam Singhji as a valuable ally," Deb said.
Earlier in the day, Mulayam Singh Yadav told newsmen in Kolkata that his party would consider an alternative front only after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
