CR aims to save Rs 1.44 cr per year by rain water harvesting

Central Railway (CR) today said that it had installed rain water harvesting units at 50 locations in the last five years, and one at the busy Lokmanya Tilak Terminus here is expected to save Rs 1.44 crore a year.
"Notable among the installations is the one at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus which is a low-cost and no-maintenance RWH costing approximately Rs 10 lakh," it said in a statement.
The system comprises a trench filled with crushed stones of various sizes.
"These crushed stones provide a medium to collect the rain water and create the pressure head which increases the percolation rate of soil. This system is so effective that even during the very high intensity of rainfall up to 100 mm per day, approximately 70 per cent rain water will percolate in the soil," it said.

The unit would fulfil 40 per cent of daily requirement of 18 lakh litres of water at LTT, saving Rs 12 lakh per month or Rs 1.44 crore annually, it said.
