Crime rate has come down in TN: CM

Crime rate in Tamil Nadu has come down to 230.79 (per 1,00,000 population) in 2016 as against 244.38 in 2015, Chief Minister K Palaniswami told the state assembly today.
In the policy note of Police department, he said the crime rate stood at 255.66 in 2014.
Giving a detailed account of IPC cases headwise, he said the total number of cases in 2016 stood at 1,79,893 against 1,87,558 in the previous year. In 2014, the number of IPC cases was 1,93,197.
While murder cases were 1,678 in 2014, it was 1,641 in 2015 and last year it was 1,511.
As regards riots, the number of cases came down to 2002 in 2016 compared to 2,648 in 2015 and 2,784 in 2014.
In respect of crimes against women, there were 471 cases of rape in 2014, 450 in 2015 and 336 last year.
In 2014 there were 95 dowry death cases, 65 in 2015 and last year it was 58, he said.
Also, there was a decline in cases in the category of 'cruelty' by husband and relatives against a woman. In 2014, it was 2103, and in 2015 it was 1,900 and last year it was 1,256.
Cases related to molestation were 1,102 (2014), 1,163 (2015) and 854 (2016). Total number of cases against women were 3,771 (2014), 3,578 (2015), 2,504 (2016), he noted.
However, the state witnessed a rise in the number of traffic accident cases with a total of 71,431 mishpas being registered in 2016 compared to 69,059 in 2016 and 67,250 in 2014.
