With an aim to improve skills of dental practitioners to ensure safety of patients and enhance overall health care quality, the Dental Council of India (DCI) today said it is keen to redesign the dental education system in the country.
DCI president Dibyendu Mazmudar said evidence-based education system (EBES) was best-suited for redesigning the dental education programme.
"The EBES is the apt system when the country is looking at revolutionising health care education while the Dental Council of India is keen to redesign the dental education system in the country," he said while addressing a gathering at the 2nd international conference on EBES held at Suman Vidyapeeth here.
EBES is an approach to all aspects of education-from policy-making to classroom practice-where the methods used are based on significant and reliable evidence derived from experiments.
"EBES is a system which is innovative and will improve skills of dental practitioners in addressing various issues concerning safety of patients and overall health care quality, which are essential components of dental practice," Mazumdar said.
The DCI president announced that Suman Vidyapeeth will work as a nodal centre for imparting such education to all 302 dental colleges in the country.
"The EBES is intended (to serve) as a guide to improve quality of dental education, care transitions and it provides a tool for institutions to monitor their progress over a period of time," he said, adding that the system is still in its infancy and need time to take root.
The delegates from countries like Canada, the USA and Switzerland presented their papers at the two-day conference concluding today.
