The Delhi Chief Minister today held a meeting with transport minister Gopal Rai to improve public transport system.
"In the meeting, the CM has directed transport department to prepare a detailed plan to buy 10,000 new buses and which types of buses the government should buy," said a senior government official.
According to department officials, there was a dire need to construct bus depots in the city as government has planned to procure new buses.
There is a requirement for 11,000 buses in Delhi with DTC and DIMTS mandated to run 5,500 buses. However, while DTC at present operates 4,700 buses, DIMTS runs around 1,300 of them.
Apart from it, issue of controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was discussed in today's meeting.
However, sources said that the decision to scrap the BRT will soon be taken in a cabinet meeting.
