Leading multi system operator Den Network has selected HD cable chipset manufactured by global semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics for its set top boxes.
STiH273(Palma) HD cable chipset, selected by Den Network would deliver high-definition content which would be almost five times better in video quality and multi-channel audio capabilities, STMicroelectronics said in a statement.
It would also ensure better user interface to access content in a more intuitive manner, it added.
Den Network is one of the leading cable service provider with a base of over six million homes.
Commenting on the development STMicroelectronics Regional Vice President, Greater China and South Asia region Vivek Sharma said:" DEN Network selection of ST's technology underlines our core competencies and reiterates our commitment to this fast-growing market through localization and co-operation with our India partners".
DEN Networks COO MG Azhar said:" The STiH273 SoC is clearly the right choice for our latest generation of set-top boxes with the right power, versatility, and features to meet our market needs. We are confident that the chipset will help us in creating both enhanced customer satisfaction and sustaining our leadership edge in India".
Sales of STB is going to rise in India as cable TV networks in India have been mandated to go digital by December 2014, which entails that TV signals may be received only through the boxes.
The government has already completed the second phase of digitisation, which involved digitising 1.6 crore cable TV houses in 38 cities by April 1, 2013.
The third phase of digitisation has to be implemented in all other urban areas (municipal corporations/ municipalities) except cities or towns or areas included in Phase I and II, by September 30, 2014. The rest of the country will be covered under Phase IV of digitisation by December 31, 2014.
According to a government estimates, TV subscribers will purchase an additional 75 million STB during 2014 alone.
