Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister C. Ngunlianchunga today inaugurated the two-week training of Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers on disaster response at the headquarters of the Fifth India Reserve battalion in Lungverh near Aizawl.
At the initial training which began today, 54 members of the YMA, including two girls, would be imparted training by experts from the First battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDPF), Guwahati.
The minister said that the YMA, which has a unit in every village has become the first response force in any disaster that hit the state and proper scientific training would come a long way in prevention and mitigation of disaster.
Training of a few members of the YMA in each village and locality would help the people before the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) could arrive at a disaster site, he added.
Meanwhile, the state government was making efforts to ensure that at least 100 trained SDRF personnel were there in each of the eight armed police battalions in the state.
