Dissident Congress MLAs in Assam today stepped up pressure on the state party leadership, urging the high command to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state unit by the end of the present week.
"Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had come here last month to assess the situation and met each party MLA and MP on a one-to-one basis. We want the high command to resolve all issues we placed before him at the earliest," five dissident Congress MLAs told reporters here.
The dissident MLAs included Dr Mansingh Rongpi, Bidyasingh Engleng, Binanda Saikia, Pradan Barua and Habul Chakraborty.
"The high command must come forward to resolve the various issues so that we can function properly as one for the remaining of the two years before next Assembly elections and gain the confidence of people," Rongpi said.
"We will wait till Saturday and then all MLAs will sit together and discuss the future course of action by Monday next. The Congress as a party has an important role to play in the state and the people expect a lot from us," he said.
The MLAs pointed out that they had placed before Kharge a number of issues to be resolved which included among others the functioning of the government.
The dissidents claim that 55 of the 77 Congress MLAs had demanded a change in the leadership of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi though there were several other issues which they had placed before Kharge like the law and order situation and statehood demands in the state, Rongpi said.
