As part of Phase III, which will be completed by the end of 2016, a total of 90 new metro stations will be constructed and these buildings are being designed keeping provisions for energy conservation, rain water harvesting and waste management, an official release stated.
The buildings will have several facilities including low water consuming fixtures like low-flow taps which help reduce water consumption.
The plant species used for landscaping of the stations will be either native or adaptive and would consume less water. The walls, roof and windows in the building will be insulated to reduce heat gains in the stations and improve energy efficiency, the release said.
DMRC is expected to save tonnes of energy and reduce CO2 emissions from these new stations.
From the elevated metro stations, saving in energy consumption would be 3,66,272 kWh per annum and CO2 emission reduction would be 345 tCO2 per annum, the release said.
Through underground stations, saving in energy consumption would be 10,11,482 kWh per annum and CO2 emission would reduce by 953 tCO2 per annum.
Apart from the stations, 12 receiving sub-stations as well as the upcoming residential quarters of DMRC will be designed in the same manner.
The Delhi Metro's corporate headquarters, 'Metro Bhawan' at Barakhamba Road has already been constructed as a 'green' building.
