One Tejpal and his wife Kiran, a physically challenged couple, had complained that on December 8 their newborn child was stolen from the district hospital by an unidentified woman, DSP Ramanand Kushwah said.
Acting on the complaint, police searched and recovered the child from the possession of one Rani, a resident of Nehtaur, who told them that Dr Lakhan Singh Pal, a SP leader and former head of UP Medical Council, and his wife Chandrawati sold the newborn to her for Rs 90,000, Kushwah said.
While, Dr Pal claimed the child was born in his hospital to one Munendra's wife and then he gave the infant to Rani, Kushwah said.
Reportedly, Dr Pal was head of Uttar Pradesh medical council during BSP regime in the state.
An investigation is underway in the matter, the DSP said.
