The constable, identified as Ganesh Pawar, attached to the Local Arms (Taedeo division) department, was arrested today following the incident. He was subsequently released on bail.
The mishap occurred last night when Pawar first crashed his Tata Indigo car into a BMW from behind and later hit one Ashok Singh who was walking down the road.
Singh sustained injuries in his legs and face in the accident.
Pawar, a resident of Gangapapadi police line at Dockyard Road, fled the scene without helping Singh.
Police traced the vehicle in the Police Colony area and also found Pawar who was heavily drunk.
He told police that he was learning driving and the vehicle belonged to his friend, an official said.
After conducting his medical examination, Pawar was booked under various sections of IPC for rash driving and under the Motor Vehicle Act.
