Delhi Government's forest department has issued a notice to Delhi University on a complaint alleging illegal cutting of 38 trees in the South Campus area here.
Acting on a complaint by RTI activist Rajkumar Paswan that cutting of trees is going on in the varsity area in an unauthorised manner and the wood is being stocked at a particular place, Delhi's Deputy Conservator of Forests (West) issued notice to five DU officials including Registrar-Tarun Das, Director of the South Campus-Umesh Rai and three university engineers.
"Where as it has been alleged that a tree offence has been committed by the university of Delhi by cutting of 38 trees and head backing or pruning of 9 trees near the Electronic and Science department of the South Campus.
"It has been found in an enquiry that the trees were illegally cut in violation of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994," the notice said.
The department has also asked the five officials to appear before the department on December 9 in connection with the complaint.
While engineers Rajender Singh and Anoop Srivastava feigned ignorance about the notice, the remaining university officials were not available for their comments on the issue.
