With just days left for new session to begin, Delhi University has announced a slew of measures to curb ragging including setting up of two control rooms with helplines for students.
"A number of important decisions were taken in a meeting of the Proctorial Board of the University of Delhi to ensure maintenance of discipline and prevention of ragging in the university and college campus," DU Registrar Alka Sharma said.
Sharma said the university will set up two joint control rooms, one each in the North and South campus from July 23.
The North Campus helpline will be 011-27667221 while for South Campus it will be 011-24119832, she said.
The DU Registrar said the decision to constitute these control rooms and other measures have been taken following the Supreme Court judgement in 2009 ordering implementation of ragging prevention programme.
Sharma said colleges and hostels have been requested to restrict the entry of outsiders and to prominently display rules regarding prohibition of ragging.
"Delhi Police has also assured that women police in plain clothes will be deployed in the university as well as outside each college. In case of any ragging or eve-teasing, the police will take care of the offenders," she said.
Other measures being taken by DU to curb ragging include constituting anti-ragging squads, mobile patrolling, extra vigil at all eating joints and circulation of anti-ragging posters.
Classes for the new academic session are to begin from July 24. This year Delhi University is introducing the new four-year undergraduate programme.
