Thomas Lennon and R Ben Garant will write the screenplay which centres on the Drebin character, which was previously played by late actor Leslie Nielsen in the first three films, reported Variety.
No director is announced for the project yet.
Based on ABC series 'Police Squad!', the franchise began with 1988's 'The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!'
The last film 'The Final Insult', was released in 1994.
Helms was last seen on the big screen in 'We're the Millers' alongside Jennifer Aniston. He will next appear in Will Ferrell's 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues'.
