East Delhi Municipal Corporation has identified 4,600 taxpayers, including some government departments, against whom penal action may be initiated for not paying outstanding property tax for 2014-15 by due date, the civic body today said.
"Notices have been issued against several government departments like Delhi Transco Limited, Power Grid, DDA, GTB Hospital, Northern Railways, etc, as property tax worth crores of rupees is due against them," EDMC Standing Committee Chairman of B B Tyagi said.
He claimed that despite sending notices to them and approaching them many times, these organisations "have not paid" their property tax, which on collection would help improve the financial situation of the cash-strapped EDMC running into losses worth more than Rs 500 crore.
"Property tax worth approximate Rs 13.66 crore is due on Power Grid Corporation of India; Rs 98.55 crore on DDA; Rs 14.63 crore on Directorate of Education; Rs 89 crore on Delhi Transco Limited; Rs 1.08 crore on Delhi Police; Rs. 4.29 crore on Northern Railways; Rs. 2.98 crore on GTB Hospital; Rs 61 lakh on DUSIB and Rs 55 lakh on the Department of Post," Tyagi said in a statement by the EDMC.
Assessor & Collector Deepak Gupta has appealed to all property owners or occupiers defaulters to pay their property tax at the earliest, else strict actions, including attachment of property, attachment of accounts and auction of property, would be taken, he said.
The defaulters, however, could not be immediately reached out over phone.
The EDMC further said that all property tax offices shall remain open on Saturdays falling on 21st and 28th of March and also on the last Sunday falling on 29th of the month, for the convenience of tax payers.
In addition, property tax collection camps are being organised from March 14 to March 21 at different places.
In addition to this, in case any camp needs to be organised, the RWA/market associations concerned may contact property tax office at the headquarters or zonal offices.
