The Health Ministry has directed All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to set up a high-level independent enquiry into the allegations that the kidneys of a 6-year old girl were removed by a doctor during surgery.
A senior ministry official said that Health Minister J P Nadda, who is presently in Geneva attending the World Health Assembly (WHA), spoke to AIIMS director and after taking stock of what has happened, directed the official to hold an enquiry.
"The Health Minister spoke with Director, AIIMS, and took stock of what had happened. The Minister has directed a high-level independent enquiry into the matter," a senior Health Ministry official told PTI.
The father of a six-year-old girl Pavan Kumar, a native of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, had approached the Hauz Khas police recently alleging that a doctor at AIIMS has removed both the kidneys of his daughter during surgery.
Following the incident, AIIMS had also constituted a high-powered committee of senior professors to probe into the allegations.
The senior Health Ministry official said that the Minister felt that this should not be a low-level department enquiry and stressed that the enquiry should be done quickly. Nadda has also asked AIIMS to keep him apprised about updates in the case, the senior official said.
Meanwhile, senior officials at AIIMS had said that the allegations made by the patient's father were of serious nature and a high-powered committee of senior professors has been constituted to probe the matter and clear the issues.
"The Committee already held a meeting on May 20 and will be again meeting this week and then submit a report to AIIMS administration," a senior doctor at AIIMS had said.
Kumar had come to AIIMS last year seeking treatment of his daughter who had developed complications in her left kidney.
