Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed the police to ensure swift filing of charge-sheet in crime against women and children, an official statement said.

Sonowal gave the directions today while chairing a law and order meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all districts through video conferencing.

No criminal should be able to get away taking advantage of the loopholes in law and that must be ensured by filing an accurate charge-sheet, an official release quoting the chief minister said.

He also directed the DCs and SPs to conduct intensive awareness campaigns with active participation of students, teachers, NGOs, village heads (gao burhas), village defence forces, panchayat members, ASHA workers, anganwadi workers, etc., so that people are made aware to prevent heinous crimes taking place against children and women in all corners of the state.

The chief minister also directed the SPs of all districts to personally monitor all such cases, the release said.

In view of the coming flood season, he also issued a directive to the DCs of all districts to ensure completion of repair works of embankments within stipulated time frame through strict monitoring.

The DC Jorhat was instructed to prevent erosion caused by Brahmaputra river at Nimati Ghat by monitoring the works closely, while DCs and SPs of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji Districts are to ensure speedy completion of Bogibeel Bridge so that it can be opened for the public at an early date.

All infrastructure development related national projects must be accorded top priority by the DCs and SPs, he added.

The chief minister also directed the SPs of all districts to act strongly against drug trafficking and illegal syndicates.
