Judicial First Class Magistrate S Lakshmi granted bail to Arumugam when his plea came up for hearing. This was the fifth bail application filed by Arumugam, the DMK's strongman in Salem district.
However, Arumugam would have to wait for the order of the Madras High Court on his plea challenging his detention under the stringent Goondas Act subsequent to his arrest.
Arumugam, lodged in Vellore Central Prison, is facing charges of abetting and conspiracy behind the attack on the colony residents, who were restored their land earlier allegedly encroached by the DMK leader.
