Ex-top cop urges strengthening infra to tackle cyber crime

Strengthening infrastructure, simplifying national and international protocol for investigation, and providing more training for police personnel were needed to tackle cyber crimes, a former top police official said today.
Outlining crimes using cyber space, technology and gadgets including terror threats and child pornography, former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, R Nataraj today said strengthening of infrastructure like the proposed cyber police stations was needed.
"Setting up cyber police stations came up even during a meet of DGPs recently," he said and added that alongside such initiatives appropriate equipment, devices and facilities including cyber forensics should be made available for analysing evidence.

"Forensic tools are important for tracking and proving fraud," he said, addressing a workshop here on cyber crimes.
Simplifying the national and international protocol for investigation into cyber crimes of trans border nature was another area that needed focus, he said.
Citing the case of a Russian, Vladimir Levin who allegedly transferred millions of dollars by hacking computers of a bank and internet frauds in Tamil Nadu involving some Nigerians, he said such cases transcended national borders.

Explaining how laborious it was to get permission for trans border probe into cyber crimes, he said the protocol for such probe exercise should be simplified.

"For probing virtual crimes, time is of essence and hence protocol should be simplified..The Central government has an important role in it."
Also, more training programme for police officers probing cyber crimes was needed, he stressed and added personnel needed to be sensitised on latest trends in cyber crimes, prevention and detection techniques.
"Prevention, detection and response modes are important," he noted.
