The incident took place when executive engineer Ram Ajor Yadav was returning with junior engineer Nandlal Gupta after inspecting a road and was stopped by some bike-borne miscreants.
They attacked the duo with sharp weapons, police said.
Yadav sustained injuries in his neck, chest and back while Gupta escaped unhurt after he managed to run away.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable.
The matter is being investigated, but no arrests have been made yet, police said.
