The final result of Nepal's November 19 polls has been submitted to the president, ending the month-long faltering election process that blocked the formation of a new Constituent Assembly.
"We have submitted the final result and now entire election process has been completed," Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety said in a statement.
After the government officially discloses the result through the government gazette, ways will be cleared for calling the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly, according to officials.
It is mandatory to call the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly within three weeks after the publication of the final list of lawmakers by the government.
The process of result announcement was delayed as the UCPN-Maoist was not submitting the names of its lawmakers elected under proportionate voting to join the assembly after it faced a humiliating defeat in the November 19 polls.
Now the way for formation of a new government has opened with the completion of the entire election process.
The commission submitted the list of 240 lawmakers elected under direct voting system and 335 lawmakers under the proportionate representation (PR) system.
The remaining 26 members of the 601-member assembly will be nominated by the new cabinet on the basis of political consensus among the parties.
The Nepali Congress, the oldest democratic party emerged the largest party with 196 seats, while the CPN-UML secured second position with 175 seats.
The Maoists, who had swept the first post-war elections in 2008, were pushed to the third position with just 80 seats.
As the single largest party in the assembly, the Nepali Congress has staked claim to head the new government.
"Now the Nepali Congress will form a government under its leadership and we will try to accommodate all major parties giving it a form of a national government," senior leader of the party Bimalendra Nidhi said.
He said that party president Sushil Koirala is most likely to be the next Prime Minister.
"If the Nepali Congress forms the government under its leadership we will give top priority to draft the constitution and it will be ready within the next six month," he said.
