The incident occurred past midnight in Chandigarh's Transport Chowk traffic light-point when the men, four of them from Rajasthan and one from UP, were sleeping on the pavement, Assistant Superintendent of Police (East) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said today, adding three other labourers were also injured.
He said that the truck driver was absconding after the accident, but one of his accomplices was arrested by the police.
"The labourers were sleeping when the truck ploughed into them. The accident occurred near the dead end of the road," Sidhu said.
A case has been registered, he said.
