With man-animal conflict reaching flashpoint, forest personnel have captured hordes of monkey, virtually invading the locality, in Odisha's Kendrapara district and released in their habitat.
The simian species virtually invaded Badamangarajpur village under Derabish block since past one month affecting normal life in the locality and adjoining areas injuring more than 30 local residents leading to sharp fall in attendance in the local primary school.
Responding to locals' petition, forest department swung into action and captured the monkeys in a 12-hr exercise, said Forest Range Officer, Himanshu Kumar Muduli.
A horde of ten monkeys were captured and later released in the forest near Olasuni hillock in Jajpur district yesterday.
Utmost care was taken to ensure that no harm is done to the captured the animals, he said.
Quite often, this costal district is bearing the brunt of simian menace. Apart from launching attack on humans, the animals ravage the crops and vegetable cultivation at regular intervals.
Monkeys found in these parts are leaf and fruit eating animals. But loss of tree cover has triggered food shortage for these simian species leading to the recurring man-monkey conflict, said Divisional Forest Officer, Rajnagar Mangrove (wildlife) Forest Division, Bimal Prasanna Acharya.
