"In my opinion, the relationship between India and Pakistan should be strong and this can be achieved only through dialogue," Sajjad, who is on a private visit to India to see his maternal grandfather's house in Jalandhar where he was born, said.
Sajjad said building trust is necessary for improving relations between the two countries.
He, however, refused to comment on the recent ceasefire violations and firing from the Pakistani side of the border, saying he would speak at great length when he comes to India on an official visit.
Sajjad was the acting President of Pakistan in 1993 and in 1996-97.
