Carcass of a male elephant was found in a field at Chettipalayam on the city outskirts today.
Based on information from the villagers, forest department officials, along with veterinarian, rushed to the spot and recovered the body, the department sources said.
Preliminary investigations revealed the cause of death was due to fighting between two pachyderms, as there was deep marks of tusks on the trunk of the dead animal, aged about 10 years, they said.
Fights between male elephants were common during the winter season, which is the mating period for elephants, the sources said.
