Vasudeo S Gaitonde's untitled painting from 1995 fetched the highest price of Rs 29.3 crore, beating the previous record which too had been set by another painting of his, at the third India sale of Indian art by the world's largest auction house Christie's here this evening.
"Gaitonde's untitled painting from 1995 was purchased by a person from abroad who is not even of Indian origin at a price of Rs 29.3 crore," a Christie's official told reporters.
Gaitonde's another untitled painting had been sold by Christie's at a whopping price of Rs 23.7 crore two years ago.
The painting was bought over phone by an anonymous person from abroad.
The painting was one of the last completed in Gaitonde's small barsaati (terrace studio) in Nizamuddin, Delhi, before he moved to Gurgaon in 1996. Gaitonde, considered to be one of the foremost abstract painters in India, passed away in 2001.
Christie's could collect Rs 97.7 crore in today's auction of artwork and artifacts.
However, there was no buyer for Modern Indian artist Syed Haider Raza's 'Bindu' in today's auction.
"Our inability to find a buyer for Syed Haider Raza's Bindu was a disappointment," Christie's official said, adding that a total of five artworks and artifacts remained unsold.
Renowned artist Tyeb Mehta's untitled image fetched Rs 10 crore during the auction.
