With the arrest of a 30-year-old man, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang which allegedly used to clone ATM cards to steal money from people's bank accounts.
The gang came under the police scanner when one of the members, who worked at a fuel refilling station in New Friends Colony here targetted several customers of a private bank, with which the matter was taken up by their clients, DCP (South East) M S Randhawa said.
A senior manager of the bank approached the police in September, following which an investigation was taken up.
With technical intelligence, the police soon tracked down the refilling station and took note of the attendance of employees present and absent on each date, and specific times, in connection with the individual complains which the bank officials had communicated to, police said.
The police zeroed in on one Ajay Kumar, a Mathura native, and started questioning him but he allegedly kept misleading them. He was later arrested on December 27 from southeast Delhi's Ashram Chowk.
During interrogation, he told the police that it was one Sachin who headed the gang and they allegedly operated in several states. They used a device - which they called as 'Sky Device', which clones ATM cards, and also secretly noted the PIN which the customer enters in a genuine ATM device, police said.
Efforts are on to nab the other gang members, police added.
