On a mission to further explore possibilities of cooperation with Tamil Nadu which has 'significant potential', German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner today called on Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat here.
During the brief meeting with the Chief Minister, the Ambassador was accompanied by German Consul General, Chennai, Dr Stefan Weckback and state Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan, official sources said.
Earlier, Steiner arrived here on his maiden two-day visit to the city during which he would also meet business leaders of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce to reflect upon the trade ties between Germany and Tamil Nadu.
"Tamil Nadu has significant potential and is ranked among the most advanced Union States in India. Germany is traditionally India's number one trading partner in the EU, German industrial majors are among the strategic investors in India and Tamil Nadu," Steiner said in a statement ahead of his visit.
"My visit in Chennai is a clear sign that we want to further explore possibilities of cooperation in all relevant fields", he said.
According to an official release from German Embassy, Steiner would meet business leaders at an informal meeting organised by Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.
He is also expected to visit the German truck manufacturer Daimler India's commercial vehicle manufacturing facility at Oragadam near here to get a 'first hand impression of investment conditions in Tamil Nadu'.
Besides, Steiner would also interact with students of Kendriya Vidyalaya situated at the IIT Madras.
