The Police today rounded up 62 displaced persons including 33 women while staging a demonstration in front of the residence of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren at Khijuria in Dumka district.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, A K Srivastav said the arrest was made for staging the demonstration illegally in front of Soren's residence.
Under the banner of Ghatwar Adivasi Mahasabha, the displaced families of Maithan and Panchet projects (DVC) had staged the demonstration in front of the office of Dumka Commissioner on October 13.
The adviser of the Mahasabha, Ramashray Singh said the organisation would chalk out its future course of action following a meeting with the state Chief Secretary October 22 at Ranchi.
Singh said DVC had acquired 41,000 acres of land in Dhanbad and Jamtara (Jharkhand) and Purulia and Burdwan (West Bengal) affecting 15,000 families, but gave employment to only 500 families.
Besides, the land was acquired six decades ago and the displaced families were yet to get adequate compensation, he said claiming 900 fake displaced persons were given employment.
The issue had been raised by MLA Mathura Prasad Mahato in the Assembly during the Monsoon session on August 4 when he demanded for a CBI inquiry, but the Chief Minister did not recommend it, forcing the Mahasabha to stage a demonstration in front of his house today.
The Mahasabha threatened to intensify its agitation if its demands were not met.
