As per the complaint lodged by the girl with the police, the auto driver hit her when she was walking down the road. When the girl and her friend protested, the driver allegedly passed abusive remarks and slapped the friend.
The police has arrested the auto driver.
Today's incident was the forth of its kind in the city since January 16. On that day a woman executive was punched in the face and left bleeding by an autorickshaw driver at Park Circus.
Again on January 27, a girl was hit from behind and injured by a three-wheeler when she was crossing arterial Mahatma Gandhi Road.
West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra had said the government would press non-bailable charges to rein in rogue auto-rickshaw drivers and stop them from overcharging the passengers.
The government has also decided to set up a helpline for passengers to register their complaints against them.
Auto-rickshaws, which are contract carriages, run illegally as stage carriages on fixed routes without meters and charge fares arbitrarily.
