Expressing shock over death of 29 people in twin train derailment in Madhya Pradesh, CPI(M) today demanded Centre to give priority to safety in railways instead of pursuing "grandiose projects" such as bullet trains.
The Left party accused the Government of not waking up to dire conditions of railways and its abysmal safety standards, despite alarming regularity with which accidents were taking place.
"Accidents on railways are happening with alarming regularity. Yet, the Government has not woken up to dire conditions of railways and its abysmal safety standards.
"Instead of pursuing grandiose projects such as bullet trains, Modi government should give priority to safety in railway system and ensure the track, signalling and safety equipment are upgraded without delay," it said in a statement.
CPI(M) expressed its doubt over the probe ordered by Railway Ministry into the accident saying "as usual, an enquiry will be conducted by Commissioner of Railway Safety (but) with no real outcome."
The party conveyed its condolences to those who lost their family members in the incident.
Twenty nine persons were killed after two trains, Kamayani and Janata Express, derailed within minutes of each other on flooded tracks while crossing a railway bridge in Harda district of the state last night and plunged into swollen Machak river.
