Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) expects approval for 150 seats in the MMBS course time this time around with the Medical Council of India (MCI) already conducting the required inspection.
A team of MCI officials have inspected the facilities at GMCH in October this year and will be submitting their report, GMCH Dean Dr Pradeep Naik, told PTI.
State's lone medical college had faced criticism last year after the MCI highlighted shortcomings in the institution after giving its nod to increase seats in MBBS course from 100 to 150.
Naik said in the last academic year, MCI had highlighted certain areas that required improvement like infrastructural facilities, which have been corrected.
The compliance inspection was carried out in February, last year and report was submitted again due to which there was a delay, he said.
The GMCH, he said, has already put up facilities like new lecture hall, new girls hostel and others which were pointed by the MCI team.
"This year, we don't expect any problem to occur," he added.
"After six years, MCI grants permanent approval which means we need not renew it annually. This year was the fifth inspection after the seats were raised from 100 to 150," the Dean said.
Naik said GMCH is also looking at enhancing the seat capacity to 200 after it gets permanent approval for 150 seats.
"For that we need to put in more infrastructure and the process is on," Naik said.
GMCH, located at Bambolim near Panaji, is Asia's oldest medical college that was commissioned during the Portuguese rule.
