A hardcore Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant was killed in an encounter with a joint team of army and police in lower Assam's Goalpara district, a Defence ministry official said here today.
The extremist of GNLA, operating in neighbouring Meghalaya, was killed after a fierce encounter with the troops of Lakhipur Army camp and police at Simlabari about 4 km from Tikrikilla in Meghalaya late last night, the Defence ministry PRO here said.
Two pistols - one 7.65mm (USA made) and one 9mm pistol (China Made) - along with fired cases and live rounds, two magazines, two hand grenades and a rucksack bag were recovered from the slain ultra, the PRO said.
Movement of GNLA insurgents has recently increased in West Garo Hills of the neighbouring state and in areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border, he added.
