Govt surgeons remove rare tumour

A very rare tumour, larger than a cricket ball, was removed from the body of a 39-year-old man by doctors at Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital here free of cost, Dean of GRGGH and Madras Medical College Dr R Vimala said here today.
"A 9 cm tumour close to foodpipe, heart, aorta, pulmonary veins and important nerves in the chest was succesfully removed," she told reporters.
"Duplication cysts in the gastro intestinal tract is very rare and such a thing occuring in oesophagus is still more rare. Such tumours are usually diagnosed in childhood and are very rare in adults and this can present with typical symptoms mimicking many medical disorders."
The tumour was detected when the patient was examined for a fever he had for two weeks.
"The location of the tumour was critical and the nature of the surgery was complex," she said.
After evaluation by experts and a CT scan, the presence of a cystic lesion of a size bigger than a cricket ball in the thoracic cavity was found."
The tumour was completely removed without any "damage to tumour itself, and other adjacent organs."
The patient has made good recovery in the post operative period and the tumour was benign.
