Under attack in Parliament for not dealing strongly with Sri Lanka over the fishermen issue, government today said it is working on a lasting solution so that there is no tension over the issue.
As Sri Lankan Navy arrested 53 Indian fishermen in the last 24 hours for allegedly entering its waters illegally, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said India has lodged a strong protest with that country over such incidents and pressed for restraint besides release of all those held.
Making a suo-motu statement in the Rajya Sabha against the backdrop of attack on government by various parties, he said Lankan Deputy High Commissioner was summoned today to convey India's concerns and demands.
His statement came as the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 53 Indian fishermen in the last 24 hours for allegedly entering its waters illegally. A week back, Sri Lankan forces opened fire injuring an Indian fisherman.
"We have called for immediate release and repatriation of the apprehended Indian fishermen. We have emphasised on the need for the Sri Lankan Navy to exercise restraint, extend humane treatment and not to resort to violence under any circumstances," Khurshid said in his statement.
He said, "We remain engaged with the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that the fishermen on both sides can continue to pursue their livelihood in a safe, secure and sustainable manner."
The government is working on a "lasting solution" so that the fishing community comes to an arrangement that does not lead to tension between the two sides, he said.
Earlier in the day, angry members from DMK, a key constituent of the ruling UPA, targeted the government in Parliament, saying it has become the "weakest" in protecting its own citizens. AIADMK also joined the attack.
Khurshid said the government attaches highest priority to welfare, safety and security of Indian fishermen and steps were being taken in this regard.
A similar statement was made by Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur in the Lok Sabha.
