The 48-year-old actor confirmed the news in response to a fan on Twitter.
"Yes it is safe to assume I have a role in 'Star Wars Episode VII'. If I say more than that, JJ will have me killed," Grunberg posted.
Grunberg and Abrams are childhood friends who used to make home videos together.
The actor has since popped up in many of Abrams's productions including 'Felicity', 'Alias' and 'Star Trek'.
Earlier this month, 'Star Wars Episode VII' cast 'Game of Thrones' actor Miltos Yerolemou.
Original 'Star Wars' actors will also be featured in the film, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew.
'Stars War Episode VII' is set for release on December 18, 2015.
