The Geological Survey of India (GSI) and University of Kashmir have decided to join hands to promote advanced research in various fields of Geosciences in the Jammu and Kashmir Himalayas.
The research will be done in Glaciology, Quaternary Geology, Hazard Zonation, Paleoclimatic and various other fields of Geosciences.
A meeting of the officials from the two organisations was recently held at the University of Kashmir to discuss the modalities of the collaboration, a spokesman of the University said today.
Additional Director General S K Wadhawan headed the GSI team while the KU team was headed by Vice-Chancellor of the University Talat Ahmad, he said.
He said the collaboration covers student and faculty exchange, use of analytical facilities, joint workshops and field campaigns, and joint implementation of the national research projects in the Himalayas.
GSI has also sought the support of the Earth Sciences Department of the Kashmir University to revive the regional GSI Centre at Ashmuquam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, he said.
The official said GSI has been designated as the Nodal agency for organising the International Geological Congress (IGC-2020)- a mega scientific conclave in year 2020.
GSI and KU have agreed to ink the MOU defining the contours of collaborative research and partnership in the field of Geosciences, the spokesman said.
