A half-burnt body of an owner of a rubber factory was recovered from inside the factory at Satgachi area of Dumdum in the northern fringes of the city, police said today.
Commissioner of Police, Barrackpore police commissionerate, Niraj Singh said a call was received last night from locals about fire in a factory following which personnel from Dumdum Police Station and fire tenders reached the spot and doused the flames.
A body was found inside a room in the factory which was later identified to be of Sajal Kumar, the factory owner, police said.
"The body was unrecognizable. Only after washing it with water it was found to be of Sarkar's," a senior police officer investigating into the matter said.
"One of his hand was tied to an almirah and one leg was tied to an iron rod. Going by the circumstantial evidences it seems that this is not a case of accident but there can be involvement of one or more persons. They had tied him so that he cannot escape the fire," he added.
In fact the doors of the room, where Sarkar's body was recovered from, was locked from outside, he said.
Sarkar's family alleged that he was "murdered" by some local promoters who were after the factory-land for quite sometime.
Based on Sarkar's family's complaint, a murder case against unknown persons have been initiated, police said, adding, they were waiting for Sarkar's postmortem report.
