Accusing the Samajwadi Party of "failing to control law and order" in Uttar Pradesh, opposition parties today demanded strict action against the policemen involved in the Hamirpur firing incident.

"The incident in Hampirpur is fallout of the goonda raj in the state. It has exposed the brutal face of the police. BSP demands from the Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to lodge murder case against guilty policemen," Leader of the Opposition in state assembly Swami Prasad Maurya told PTI.

He alleged that SP "goondas" misbehaved with the girl and the state police "patronised" them and opened fire at villagers.

"The police has become so insensitive that it opened fire at villagers killing two and did not take the pain to arrest the accused. The hooligans are hand in gloves with police and the entire state is burning," he said.

BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai noted that the incident of eve-teasing by "Samajwadi Party goons" due to which a girl had to resort to self-immolation was unfortunate.

"BJP will take up the issue. We have sent a team of party leaders to Hamirpur to probe the incident. As the accused were associated with SP (Samajwadi party), no action was taken against them. The victim's father and relatives were taken to the police station and beaten up badly by the police," he said.

"The goonda raj of police is at its peak and the present government has failed to check it," he added.

Congress spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi also pitched in condemning the incident, stating it was the habit of the ruling party to suppress voice of poor people.

"A gang of party workers and police is operating and both are involved in committing crime. UP is the only state where criminals are patronised by a political party," Tripathi rued.

Tension prevailed in Hamirpur district after police firing left two villagers dead when they were protesting the death of a 15-year-old girl, who immolated herself after being teased by two youths.
