The Haryana government today cleared a proposal to set up a special task force for tightening the noose around wanted criminals, including serial killers and those who indulge in organised crime.
The state may also enact a law similar to the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, passed in 1999 to combat organised crime and terrorism.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar approved a proposal to to set up the task force during a meeting of the Police Department here today.
The task force, which will be headed by an IGP-level officer, will be headquartered in Gurugram.
Khattar directed the police to closely monitor caste- based issues.
He asked the police to immediately nab the main accused in the killing of a 17-year-old Muslim youth on board a Mathura-bound train on June 22, and seek strict punishment for all those involved in the heinous crime.
Khattar directed officers to carry out special campaigns to nab the accused wanted for crimes such as snatching, theft, dacoity, extortion and kidnapping, an official spokesman said.
The chief minister said steps should be taken to curb the drug trade.
The officers were also told to study the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act so that a similar Act could be brought in Haryana.
