The Haryana Police has decided to install speed radars on 187-km stretch of Ambala-Delhi national highway to keep a check on overspeeding vehicles, an official said on Sunday.

The equipment detects the speed of a vehicle and displays it on LED screen.

The speed radars will be installed in five Haryana districts -- Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat -- through which the highway passes, said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Navdeep Singh Virk.

He said the speed radars will be connected to a centralized control room.

The decision was taken at a session held during the 31st National Road Safety Week-2020 chaired by Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Yadava, Virk said.

Besides, police have also decided to install Automatic Number Plate Readers (ANPRs) and cameras on the highway's stretch, the official said.

He said this will deter reckless drivers and help in minimizing loss of human lives in road accidents.

Virk said the Haryana Police has also undertaken several initiatives, including awareness drives, workshops and seminars, to highlight and emphasize the need for road and traffic safety across the state.
