Expressing grave doubts and concern regarding the conduct of police in the suspicious death of a 24-year-old man, the Madras High Court today ordered the body to be exhumed for a fresh postmortem.
Justice C.T.Selvam referred to the earlier post-mortem report which mentioned about bleeding from the mouth, nose and anal area and also the ligature marks around neck and directed the SP of Virudhunagar district to supervise the exhuming of the body and facilitate the re-postmortem.
The Judge also directed that the re-postmortem be conducted by K.Thangaraj, Head of the Department of Forensic Science Medicine, SRM Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur, and said the state should make a provision for his accommodation expenses, among others. A government doctor also should be present during the post-mortem.
The Director General of Police, the Virudhungar District Collector and the SP should ensure the payment of Rs.40,000 to Thangaraj for utilising his service.
The petitioner Periyamangi submitted her son Rasukutty, a driver with a private school in Madurai, fell in love with a school girl and eloped with her. On a complaint, Koodalputhur Police registered a complaint.
On November 14, both surrendered before a Police Inspector in Virudhunagar district.
The Inspector and Sub inspector beat her son in her presence after sending her out, the petitioner alleged. Then they handed over the girl to the Koodalputhur Inspector. After beating her son, they had taken him to an abandoned house 500 metres from the police Station, she alleged.
Later when she went to the police station along with her relatives, she was informed that her son committed suicide in the abandoned house. She alleged son was done to death and prayed that the body be exhumed and a fresh post mortem be consducted so that truth would come out.
