A Division Bench of the Madras High Court today ordered police to strictly implement the rule which made wearing of helmet mandatory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders and deal with the violators as per law.
Justice R Sudhakar and Justice V M Velumani directed police officials to submit a fresh report on April 1 on the implementation of the Government Order. 292 passed on February 22, 2007.
Police officials submitted that in the last six years 6,62,874 cases had been registered and Rs 2.89 crore collected as fine from the violators.
They also said awareness programmes were being conducted for the general public including school and college students on the need to follow traffic rules and wearing helmet.
The order was passed on a PIL petition by one T Darbarraja who had complained that the helmet rule was not implemented effectively and his representations to the government evoked no response.
The court had earlier directed the Home Secretary and the Director-General of Police to submit their reports on the implementation of the G.O.
