The Madras High Court today issued notice to the Election Commisson on a plea seeking a direction to the poll panel to de-recognise the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) as a political party alleging that it was involved in communal politics which led to largescale violence in northern districts of Tamil Nadu recently.
When the petition came up for hearing today, the First Bench, comprising, Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, ordered issuance of notice to the EC, returnable in four weeks.
The bench also issued notice to PMK founder S Ramadoss, his son and former Union Minister Ambumani Ramadoss and other senior party leaders.
The petition, filed by an outfit "Indhiya Makkal Mandram", alleged that despite its undertaking before the EC that it would not engage in politics dividing people on communal and caste lines, PMK violated it and was allegedly responsible for the Marakkanam violence involving caste Hindus and Dalits on May 25.
