HC orders issue of notices to govt officials

Madras High Court bench here today ordered issue of notice to state government officials on a PIL seeking to implement the Tamil Nadu Government Order to remove the "caste suffix" from the names of the streets and towns, passed 37 seven years ago.
According to the petitioner Pon Thammabla, Founder Managing Trustee of "Dr Ambedkar Foundation' as per the Government order local bodies should pass resolution for removing the caste suffix from the streets and towns. The District Collectors should monitor and file a report to the government to effect that the caste suffix had been removed. The GO was passed on October 31 1978 and it had not been implemented properly.

He submitted said that all the "Adidravidars" should be called as "Adidravidar community" without mentioning the respect "sub-sect caste suffix". A Government Order regarding the same had also been ordered on February 24 2007. But it had not been implemented, the petitioenr said.
But the caste suffix had not been removed from street names and town names. This led to existence of caste system in many local bodies.
The judges ordred notices to the Chief Secretary and secretaries of Municipal and Water Supply, Principal Secretary, Aandrural development and Panchayat Raj Prinicipal secretary and posted the cse for hearing to March 23.
