The Madras High Court today restrained the Vellore based Voorhees College from parting with any personal information with regard to an ex-professor of the College.
Justice T S Sivagnanam on a petition filed by the ex-professor I Elangovan has granted interim injunction against the college restraining it from parting with any personal information in response to applications filed under RTI Act.
Elangovan has started practicing law after his carrier as college lecturer for three and half decades.
He moved the petition after facing nearly about 29 RTI applications filed in connection with the personal information sought with regard to him by the persons who were affected by the activities of him as a social activist.
According to his counsel for Elangovan, the ex-professor had helped a Dalit woman, who suffered harassment at her husband's hands. After his efforts, police filed an FIR and charge sheeted the husband and his father under the provisions of SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
While the trial of the case is pending in a special court in Vellore, the husband started filing a series of RTI applications seeking "personal and irrelevant" questions from the college about Elangovan, the counsel for the petitioner submitted.
Some of the applications sought details such as Elangovan's salary particulars and whether he was suspended from service.
Justice Sivagnanam adjourned the matter after eight weeks for further hearing.
