The Bombay High Court at Goa has asked the state government to submit details of the process it follows to cancel the licences of casino operators if they fail to pay the fee as prescribed in the latest notification of the government.
A division bench of Justices N M Jamdar and Prithviraj Chavan asked Advocate General Dattaprasad Lawande to file a written reply on the process and modalities for cancellation of casino licences tomorrow.
The bench also asked whether a showcause notice is issued to casino operators before cancelling the license.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Gopal Kanda-controlled Golden Globe Hotels Private Limited (GGHPL) which wanted a reduction of the license fee.
The state government hiked the fee from April 1, 2018 arbitrarily, without considering its impact on the tourism industry, the casino company said.
It also sought a court direction to the government to allow it to pay the recurring license fee of Rs 30 crore in instalments.
The court has refused to entertain the plea to reduce the license fee, noting that the notification hiking the fee was general, and not specific to the petitioner.
