The division bench of Justices Jayant Patel and J B Pardiwala sought the report by August 20.
It directed the state to specify how many vehicles are more than ten years old and how many of them run on diesel. It also sought their registration numbers.
The court was hearing a petition seeking a review of an order of July 2012 directing the state government to make it compulsory to use natural gas as fuel in every (four-wheeler) vehicle registered in the state. The order has not been implemented so far.
The review petition filed by Indian Oil LPG Coalition through advocate Mayur Rajguru opposes the order, saying that the HC had not relied on any report on pollution caused by diesel vehicles then.
The court, in 2012, only relied on report tabled by the then union minister Jayanthi Natrajan before Parliament on the subject, he said.
