A special heritage walk was organised in Chandni Chowk area in old Delhi today to mark the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Lala Hardayal.
The walk hosted by North Delhi Municipal Corporation started from century-old Hardayal Heritage Public Library and ended at nearly 150-year-old Town Hall.
The library, originally named Hardinge Library after the then Viceroy Lord Charles Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, was renamed after Independence.
"Lala Hardayal was a great freedom fighter as well as an excellent orator. His personality is a source of inspiration for the youth.
"The presence of this library in the heart of Delhi and the fact that it is visited by a large number of people proves that the relevance of printed books has not decreased among the youth despite the popularity of internet and e-books," Union Minister of State for HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey said.
Member of Parliament from East Delhi Maheish Girri, North Delhi Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar, Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay, Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba and local area councillor Surekha Gupta, secretary of the library, Shobha Vijender were also present on the occasion.
Nayyar said the North Delhi Municipal Corporation provides full grant to the library to help in its preservation.
Upadhyay said that any country is identified by its culture and this old library is a symbol of our culture.
"The event was organised to make people aware about this historical library and its legacy. She demanded from the Union government and Delhi government to expand this library so that more book lovers can benefit from it," Shobha said.
Born on October 14 in 1884, Hardayal was a nationalist revolutionary, who founded the Ghadar Party in the US.
