Acting on a tipoff, BSF jawans along with counter intelligence team of Punjab Police held a special vigilance drive. On noticing suspicious activities of the smugglers near Gajjal border outpost (BOP) the jawans challenged them on which they opened fire, BSF Inspector General, Punjab Frontier, Anil Paliwal said.
When the jawans retaliated, the smugglers fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness and standing crops, the IG said.
They also recovered one pistol, its one magazine, five bullets and four empty bullet shells from the spot, he said.
This year, the BSF has recovered 316 kg heroin along the International Border area from across the state.
